The book, over 25,000 words, describes and attempts to interpret the twice yearly alignment of the central tomb at in the Carrowmore passage tomb complex with sunrise in the Ballygawley Mountains. The book launch coincides with the opening of Carrowmore by the Office of Public Works for the actual sunrise event on the morning of Tuesday October 31st. Those wishing to attend need to wear warm clothes and good footwear, and to be at the Visitor Centre at 7.15 am. After the visit to Listoghil on Tuesday the 31st Pádraig Meehan will give a talk and slide show in the Visitor Centre.

MARY AND ME

On Wednesday the 25 th of October, Patrick Talbot Productions in association with Wild Productions bring their production, Mary and Me to the Hawk’s Well Theatre.

Set in Ireland in 1980’s, this seventy minute one-woman show is inspired by a true story, that of Ann Lovett, a 15 year old girl who died giving birth at a grotto in Granard, Co. Longford. Written and performed by Irene Kelleher and directed by Belinda Wild, the subject of the story is, of course, still very relevant today. The play follows the life of Hannah, a young woman in the months before she gives birth, the everyday happenings in her life; her maths tests, art projects and relationships with boys and family. She shares these events with the statue of Mary and in the company of Mary Magdalene in the local village grotto. The play is an imagining of a young woman’s search for understanding and is an original and unique imagining of the girl at the centre of a tragic event that shocked the nation.

After five star reviews at the Brighton Festival, and an invitation to appear at PERCEPTIONS, the new festival of women’s writing in London, Mary and Me comes to the Hawk’s Well as part of its first Irish tour. The show will be followed by a chat show with theatre’s artist in residence, Bob Kelly.

HENRY KELLY (1894-1920): CO. SLIGO’S FORGOTTEN REBEL

Book launch of ‘Henry Kelly (18941920): Co. Sligo’s Forgotten Rebel’ will be hosted by Liber Bookshop in O’Connell Street Sligo from 12.00 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, 21st of October.

Come along to learn of the story of one of the few Sligo soldiers to fight in Easter Week on the side of the rebels. ‘Henry Kelly (1894-1920): County Sligo’s Forgotten Rebel’ is a short biographical study of Volunteer Henry Kelly of Ballygawley, an Easter Rebel of 1916, who was executed by an RIC Auxiliary Raid on the Banba Hall, Dublin on the 17 th of October, 1920, during the War of Independence.

The author hoped to revitalise the life of a forgotten rebel, one of only a handful of Sligo natives to involve themselves in the 1916 Rising. Henry received no adulation, no recognition and no medals due to his early demise. The author wishes to rectify this tragedy with this publication.

Proceeds of the book will go towards the resurfacing of Henry’s weathered headstone in Kilross Cemetery, Ballygawley and towards an application for posthumous IRA medals due to him and his next of kin.
