Man (19) is charged with false imprisonme­nt, assault

A 19-year-old man has appeared at Sligo District Court on charges relating to the robbery, assault and false imprisonme­nt almost two years ago. Calem Meade from Killasona, Granard, County Longford will be tried in the Circuit Court for the offences which occurred on November 12 th 2015 at a house at Glengoolag­n, Ballisodar­e.

Meade is charged with falsely imprisonin­g Charles Townsend and robbing him of €180 in cash along with a Walter pistol. The defendant is further charged with assaulting Mr Townsend, causing him harm. Detective Garda James Hannigan gave evidence of arresting Meade in Longford and brining him before the court last Thursday.

When the three charges were put to Meade he replied: “I’m very sorry for what I have done.”

“I’m sorry. I hope the man is okay.”

“I’m very sorry. I hope he is okay.”

Inspector Dennis Harrington told the court that the DPP had directed the case proceed on indictment in the Circuit Court.

There was no objection to bail and Meade, who was represente­d by Ms Laura Spellman, solicitor was remanded to November 9 th for service of the book of evidence.

As part of his bail set by Judge Kevin Kilrane he must sign on daily at Granard Garda Station, obey a 10pm to 8am curfew, stay out of Sligo except for court business and have no contact with the injured party.
