A 28-year-old man has been jailed for five months arising out of a number of incidents.

John Dennedy of Racecourse View, Cranmore is currently serving a sentence handed down from the Circuit Court and isn’t due for release until September 2018, Judge Kevin Kilrane was told at a sitting of the District Court last Thursday.

The five month term will run concurrently to the sentence the defendant is at present serving.

Inspector Dennis Harrington outlined how on January 12 th at Tesco, O’Connell Street the defendant was one of three observed fighting. The other two were juveniles. There was no serious injuries and Dennedy was summoned for assault and with engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour. On November 7 th 2014, the defendant caused damage to the window of a car belonging to Tony Murrin at 4 St Anne’s Terrace. On November 26 th 2015 there a case at Sligo District Court involving a number of parties and the matter was dealt with. Gardaí tried to keep the parties apart including the defendant as they left the courthouse but a fist fight erupted outside and spilled back inside. Dennedy also admitted breaking the wing mirror off a car at Holborn Street causing €300 worth of damage which wasn’t paid for.

On November 5 th 2011, the defendant damaged a window of 4 St Anne’s Terrace with a steel bar. There was also an inciddent at Centra, Castle Street where he was intoxicated and became abusive to Gardaí. A piece of a sandwich was spat out at Garda McTiernan during this incident.

Mr Mark Mullaney, solicitor (defending) pleaded that the defendant’s father was a brother of Tony Murrin and there was bad blood between them which unfortunately had moved on to the next generation.

At the time of these incidents, Dennedy was abusing alcohol and drugs, said Mr Mullaney. He would have very little recollection of the circumstances of them, he added. The defendant apologised in writing to Garda McTiernan.

Dennedy was currently doing courses while in prison and was working in the kitchen of the prison in Castlerea. It was his hope of getting a transfer to the Grove houses in the prison or to Loughan House in Blacklion. On the Garda McTiernan assault charge the defendant was jailed for five months. All other charges were taken into consideration. Cash bail of €300 lodged earlier was ordered to go to the owner of the car damaged at Holborn Street.
