Breathing life into old furniture
NATIONAL REUSE MONTH PROJECT
TO mark national reuse month, a Sligo furniture shop owner took on a challenging project - to turn an old wardrobe into a funky kitchen pantry - using only recycled materials.
Éadaoin Murray who owns ‘Wooden it be Nice’ in Grange village has now entered the finished piece into a nationwide competition on FreeTrade.ie
“It was an amazing project to work on,” says Éadaoin, “Giving old and dated furniture a new lease of life is so rewarding.”
She adds: “I’m often saving beautifully crafted pieces from landfill . I also love when clients bring me a piece they don’t actually like because it may be dark and dated but they can’t get rid of it because of a sentimental attachment. Being able to spruce up a piece and custom paint to the clients’ tastes and colour preference is wonderful.”
The wardrobe transformation took the talented craftswoman a week to complete. Éadaoin enlisted the help of local carpenter Mick Geelan.
“Mick was the brains behind the project. I felt the wardrobe was such a beautifully crafted piece it would be almost wasted hidden away in bedroom,” she explains,“hence the idea to re-purpose it.”
The fit out included everything from old pallets, skirting board, chair parts and scrap wood. When Eadaoin works her magic clients can fall in love with an old piece they had once resigned to the attic.
“This is definitely the most rewarding part of my job,” says the Grange based business woman. The one off bespoke kitchen pantry retails at €995.
