Scales and ‘deal bags’ in man’s home

WHEN Gardaí searched a house in Ballisodar­e they found cannabis, weighing scales and deal bags, Sligo District Court was told.

Summoned for having the drug for the purpose of sale or supply on January 15 th 2016 was Jason McDonagh (26) of 7 Woodbrook Heights, Ballisodar­e.

Inspector Paul Kilcoyne said the items were found in a bin after Gardaí carried out a search of the house. The cannabis was worth €300.

Mr Tom MacSharry, solicitor (defending) pleaded that he had the drug for his own use and for supplying to his partner and his brother.

Judge Kevin Kilrane asked why did the defendant needed a weighing scales and Mr MacSharry said he had wanted to put it into certain small packages.

Mr MacSharry said the defendant had been addicted to cannabis but had since engaged in counsellin­g.

Judge Kilrane adjourned the case to January 25 th next for €300 for a fine.

At the same court, Stephen Hallahan (33), Joe McDonnell Drive, Cranmore admitted possessing €50 worth of cocaine at Pilkington Terrace on February 2nd. The case was adjourned to October 18th 2018 for monitoring. Ms Laura Spellman, solicitor (defending), entered a plea to the offence.

Colin Jinks, 16 Devins Drive, Cranmore was fined €200 for having €50 worth of cannabis herb at his home on November 24 th 2016.

He has previous conviction­s for possessing cannabis and told the court he wasn’t a drinker but he smoked a bit of cannabis in his own home. He didn’t carry it into the street. His home had been raided.

If he drank he told the Judge he would see a lot more of him. He understood cannabis wasn’t legal.

Mr Mark Mullaney, solicitor (defending), said the defendant was a man who smoked cannabis from time to time and he told him that he was cutting back.

Judge Kilrane said cases were being made for the legalisati­on of cannabis but it wasn’t and he had to apply the law as it was not as it might be.

At the same court the probation act was applied in respect of a case of possession against David Quinn of 19 Marren Park, Ballymote. A minimal amount of cannabis herb was found in a grinder at the house on July 19 th last
