Poppy wreath layer should reveal motive

TWO fresh poppy wreaths have been replaced at a memorial in Rosses Point which was vandalised last Friday.

The vandalism sparked controversy online with both pro and anti poppy views being aired ahead of Remembrance Day on 11 November.

Remembrance Day is observed in the UK and other countries to remember members of the British armed forces who died in the line of duty - including hundreds from Sligo town and county.

The wreaths were placed by an unknown person alongside a white cross, which is there to pay tribute to people who have lost their lives at sea.

The vandalism was condemned by County Councillor Chris MacManus:

“On Sunday morning I visited Rosses Point to view the damage done to a memorial cross that was placed to honour and remember all those who died at sea. It was a forlorn sight.

“To the individual or individuals, who were involved in this act of wanton vandalism you are nothing but a clueless imbecile. If you are from our community, you represent no one and as a community we are ashamed of you,” he said.

He also called on the person who laid the wreath at Rosses Point to “explain your actions.”

“Maybe your actions were misguided or more worrying designed to provoke a response. If the latter is the case, shame on you,” he said. Opinion, page 27.
