Sligo woman releases collection of short stories

CARTRON’S Maureen Harkin has fulfilled a life long ambition and released her very own collection of short stories.

Launched on Saturday night at the Sligo City Hotel, Maureen was also raising funds for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, with €5 from the sale of each book on the night going to the charity. “IT’S a collection of short stories, poems, all about growing up and growing old and everything that comes with life. It’s all fiction,” she told The Sligo Champion.

The book has been a work in progress for some years, but since Maureen’s retirement from the HSE last year, she found the time to compile this collection.

“I joined a writing club about six years ago and it’s something I would have loved to do when I was younger but life got in the way. Some of the pieces in the books would be maybe four years old and I would have tweaked them a bit.”

Cystic Fibrosis Ireland is a charity close to her heart and Terri Golden, mother of the late Grainne Golden was a speaker on the night.

“We have lost three young people in the locality in the last few years to Cystic Fibrosis so it’s close to my heart. I volunteer at flag days as well.”

She added: “I’ve had great moral support. My husband Jim did all the editing and he went through everything with a fine toothcomb. Aisling Golden designed the front cover. It was printed by a company in Dublin.”
