Cornview on a roll with six wins from six

-

THE Sligo Rovers Astro League continued last week, as the focus for all teams is to finish in the top six before the league splits at Christmas. As it stands, 12 teams in the league have the ability to finish in the top half, which suggests some very competitive weeks of games ahead.

Cornview Celtic have the reputation of being the team to beat, having registered a very impressive five wins from five, while also notching 25 goals in those five games.

They faced a difficult test last week however, as the faced a very physical Forrest Celtic side.

The game proved very tight and competitive from the start, with both teams creating chances but failing to capitalise in the final third. It proved to be Cornview’s biggest test to date, as they found themselves frustrated at the lack of openings and time on the ball.

Stephen Coen eventually broke Forrest hearts as he gave his Cornview side a slender 1-0 lead with twenty minutes left. To their credit, Forrest continued to test and probe their opponents but again failed to capitalise in front of goal.

Cornview eventually wrapped up the game on the stroke of full time after a neat finish from midfielder Ja Lyons. The result ensured Cornview registered six wins from six games and sit top of the league standings.

The Bourbon bar continued their positive run of form with a hard fought 2-1 victory over the Bald Eagles. Jim Sheridan opened the scoring for the Bourbon from a corner, as he rose highest in the box to head home.

The Bald Eagles enjoyed plenty of possession and tested their opponents on numerous occasions thereafter, but struggled to hit the target. Both sides could have and probably should have scored more in the game, but it was 10 minutes from time when the Bourbon doubled their lead, this time courtesy of Danny Andrews. Seamie Cannon got one back for the Bald Eagles after some delightful skill but it came too late for his side, as they slipped to fifth in the league.

There were also wins for Calry who defeated Ballymote Celtic 1-0 courtesy of a Neil Mc Cabe goal and Inter Inferno collected the three points against Strand Celtic after defeating them 6-2. The goals for Inter came from Jaco Rush, Robert Harrison, Joe O Rourke and a hat trick from Ray Mulvey.

This week’s fixtures are as follows: Tuesday @9pm Forrest Celtic vs Inter Inferno

Wednesday @8pm Bald Eagles vs White Gorillas

Wednesday @9pm GSS vs Sally Gardens

Friday @8pm Calry vs Foleys Bar
