Tributes as Humbert St’s Paddy laid to rest

One of Humbert Street’s oldest residents has died.

Paddy Faul, who was in his early 80s, died on October 17 th in the Northwest Hospice in the loving care of his Mary, daughter Frances and family.

Paddy was a well-known man around Tubbercurry and was featured a number of times in this paper, as he openly spoke about his battle with cancer along with life in his beloved hometown.

Paddy was featured along with Mary most recently back in January when the couple celebrated their

60 th wedding anniversary.

Humbert Street held a special place for Paddy. He was born there in the 1930s and grew up in the town when economic times were tough.

He emigrated to England in the fifties and was based for more than 50 years in Birmingham, where he was involved in the transport business.

Paddy was heavily involved in the Workers Unions and helped out fellow colleagues.

Although based in Birmingham, home was never far from his mind and he was regularly in touch with the locals.

Paddy and Mary spent some years in Mohill before returning to the beloved Humbert Street.

Paddy was involved in Tubbercurry Tidy Town and he was regularly helping out in Church. He was a big contributor to the upkeep of his native Humbert Street over the last number of years. Although he was diagnosed with cancer when he was 77 years old, Paddy fought the disease, undergoing extensive surgery and treatment in Galway University Hospital and Sligo University Hospital.

Paddy said at the time that his faith and prayers kept him going, along with the support from Mary and his family, neighbours and friends.

So much did a reunion with old neighbours on Humbert Street mean to him, that Paddy attended an event less than a day after undergoing surgery. Back in 2013, when he was 78, he was determined to attend the reunion in Cawley’s Hotel with Mary, where he was described as the star of the show. Paddy will be sadly missed from his beloved street. He is survived by his wife, Mary, daughter, Frances, son-in-law Stuart, granddaughter Fiona, brother Des, sister Anne, inlaws, cousins and a large circle of friends. His Funeral Mass was held in the Church of St. John the Evangelist, Tubbercurry and Paddy was laid to rest in Rhue Cemetery.
