Bernice to feature on RTE food show
SLIGO woman Bernice Ann Beukes who is originally from South Africa will feature on the RTE food show ‘ Tastes Like Home.
Presented by celebrity chef Catherine Fulvio and sponsored by Londis, the popular programme is back for a second series.
The TV show is a cooking show with a dash of travel with episodes airing on Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm on RTÉ One and running for six weeks.
As part of the show Catherine Fulvio visits six families from Belfast, Roscommon, Carrick on Suir, Dublin, Kildare and Sligo who will show her how to make their favourite Tastes Like Home dishes, before she jets off to locations around the world to recreate the dishes with their friends and family living abroad. This year she visited families in South Korea, Cape Town, Mexico, LA, Vancouver and Johannesburg.
In the third episode airing on 22nd November, Catherine travels to South Africa to meet the family of Bernice Ann Beukes from Sligo. They teach Catherine how to cook a Sugar Bean Curry to bring a taste of Cape Town to Ireland for the South African native.
This episode differs from the rest as the show starts in Cape Town and Catherine comes home with her new recipe.
According to Catherine Fulvio: “We do a reverse show this year so we start in Cape Town and we hear about their daughter who has been living in Sligo for the last number of years and we are taught how to make a ‘Sugar Bean Curry’ by her family as that is a taste she misses from home, so it has been very varied this year which has been great”.
“One of my favourite aspects to the show is the chance to witness firsthand the connection people have with the food they grew up with and the emotions stirred with the fond memories it evoked. A familiar smell, a voice, a taste – it can throw you right back to sitting in your mother’s kitchen and for people living abroad, the emotion is even stronger because they have that physical distance from home. We experience some fantastic things like meeting a cheetah up close in South Africa, zip-lining in the Mexican jungle, eating sea urchins in South Korea, as well as visiting some of the foodie hotspots in the adopted homes of our participants.”
