Festive cheers for big switch!
LARGE CROWD GATHERS FOR THE SWITCHING ON OF THE SLIGO CHRISTMAS LIGHTS LAST SATURDAY
IT’S beginning to feel a lot like Christmas on the streets of Sligo after the annual switching on of the Christmas Lights last Saturday.
Hundreds turned out to watch World Junior Swimming Championship gold medallist Mona McSharry flick the ‘ big switch’ on O’Connell Street. The 40,000 festive lights and 16 extra christmas trees have been extended to more streets this year thanks to the Sligo Business Improvement District and Sligo County Council. Cathaoirleach Cllr Seamus Kilgannon, Cllr Rosaleen O’Grady, Cllr Tom McSharry and Cllr Marie Casserley attended. This year, a selection of carols was sung by participants of the Sligo Choral Festival and thank you to all our local residents who came out to join in the festivities.
The Christmas lights will be in place for the duration of the Christmas period. Speaking at yesterday’s Sligo Municipal District meeting, Cllr O’Grady said the town should make a “day festival” out of the occasion next year when O’Connell Street will be refurbished. “It was a lovely event and thanks to Gail McGibbon of BID. Sligo is open for business!” she said.
