COUNTY Sligo Swimming Club celebrated a supreme swimming achievement at the recent Connacht Short Course Championships 2017.

The men’s senior relay team broke the 200m Senior Freestyle Connacht record by 2.52 seconds, winning their race in a time of 1:37:29.

Sligo swimmers Peter Mooney, Eanna O’Hara and brothers Ronan and Eoin Anderson expressed delight at finally putting this Sligo achievement on Record at Connacht’s Hall of Fame.

Galway SC created the previously held record in December 2012 in a time of 1:39:81. Head Coach Eduardo Santos applauded the achievement and highlighted how hard these swimmers have trained to be rewarded with their new record.

This achievement was one of many at the Connacht short course Championships, from which 15 Sligo swimmers qualified to the National Short Course Championships later this year, an increase of 50% on last year’s qualifiers.

Sligo won a total of 35 medals including, 12 gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze and saw super swims from all of the 33 athletes who travelled to compete.

The Sligo team overall achieved personal best times in over 70% of their 226 competitive swims.

Eduardo said: “The progress we are seeing in Sligo Swim Club is encouraging for all involved and the training plans we have put in place in recent years are really starting to bear fruit for the swimmers, all of whom work so hard for the sport and for Sligo.”
