LIGHTS STOLEN

The Tubbercurry community was shocked last week when news filtered out that the Christmas lights for the entire town were stolen from the location where they are stored.

The Chamber of Commerce and Community Association go to great lengths and cost each year to light up the town for the enjoyment of everybody, but especially for children. Works had just started in getting the various strings upgraded and checked out prior to erection. This is work that is done on a part time basis by a small dedicated team who have been doing this same work for many years at a very keen cost.

When they arrived at the store last week to commence erection works, they discovered the entire set of strings had been stolen. How anybody can stoop so low as to steal town lights is beyond comprehension, and defies all logical thinking. It is one of the meanest types of crimes that could occur and is a sad reflection on parts of society.

The Gardaí were immediately contacted to investigate the theft, and while they are following various lines of enquiry, no sign of the lights have been found. It is felt this is a crime carried out by local people and some people must definitely know who the culprits are.

Replacement of these lights will cost up to €3,000, and donations are sought from the public to help have them replaced and erected in time for Christmas. Each year the lights are switched on December 8 and it is hoped this can be the case again this year.

The thieves might steal the Christmas lights, but we will not let them steal the Christmas Festive Spirit, and Goodwill that the lights help create.

Donations can be left in to Geraldine Brennan at ‘The Laundry Basket’ or you can donate online by logging on to gofundme.com/tubbercurry-xmas-lights-were-stolen

NEW DVD

Back in 1997, Tubbercurry celebrated their 600th Anniversary of the founding of Tubbercurry, and a yearlong celebration of Tubbercurry 600. This celebration included EU Commissioner, Rary McSharry officially opening the event and also included president Mary Robinson visiting Tubbercurry for the Old Fair Day in August 1997.

As part of the celebrations, local camera man Tom Walsh recorded ‘A day in the Life of Tubbercurry’, starting at 6 a.m. till midnight. It includes children coming and going to school, businesses and workers going about their days work and various interviews.

A new DVD – ‘Tubbercurry, A day in the Life’ is now available for sale at €15, and would be of great interest to anybody or any family from the town or area. Proceeds of the sales will go to help replace the Christmas lights which were stolen last week.

The DVD will be available for sale in various outlets over the next few weeks, and would make an ideal Christmas stocking filler.
