The Sligo Champion

Lough Gill supply boost

Bríd was one of several customers coming and going all day at McTiernan’s Daybreak filling station and Post Office in Ballygawley.

The winning Quick Pick ticket was sold after 2pm on Monday 27 th November and won the 9pm lotto Plus.

The winning numbers for the Daily Million Plus top prize were: 15, 16, 20, 27, 30, 39 and the Bonus was 04.

Owner Antoinette McTiernan got a call after 11pm that night and it was officially confirmed the following morning.

“The lucky ticket was a Quick Pick, one ticket for ¤1.50,” she said in between serving her regular customers.

“We have no idea who it is because we sold quite a few yesterday, we were busy,” she said.

Her store is on the main Drumshanbo road and is the only shop between Sligo and Ballyfarnon in County Roscommon. “You’d have quite a bit of passing traffic coming from Drumshanbo down this way to Ballyfarnon and Keadue, Geevagh, Sooey and Gleann and of course Ballygawley. We would have a good local support here for our shop,” she said.

“We just had mainly locals in, we have good local support. We wish them every success and happiness with it. It will make big changes for them. We especially wish them happiness, that would be the main thing for their future,” she said.

It’s the first big win for the Ballygawley shop and Antoinette says the win will mean “plenty more lotto tickets will be selling hopefully from now on!”

Antoinette and her her three staff members who worked that day, Mary McGarry, Mairead Brennan and Sarah O’Connell, are still trying to figure out who the lucky winner might be.

“We haven’t heard yet, it could be another few days before we’ ll hear. If they back in here we’ ll pop the champagne!” she laughed.

“Any word?” asked one curious customer of Mary. When told they hadn’t heard who the winner was, the man said: “You won’t hear either. They’re too cute around here! This place has gotten a great kick of life today.”

Another woman was delighted with the “great excitement” for Ballygawley as she bought a stamp from the Post Office: “We’re on the map now, for the right reasons.” “Best of luck to them,” said another customer.

“That’s a nice Christmas windfall. Watch who’s got a new car in January!” laughed another. IRISH Water has welcomed the news that the Lough Gill Regional Water Supply has been removed from the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Remedial Action List following a €3 million investment in the Sligo & Environs Water Supply Scheme.

The investment is ensuring a more sustainable water supply is provided to approximately 11,000 people who were served from Cairn’s Hill Water Treatment Plant.

The works involved the upgrading g of the existing Foxes Den Water Treatment Plant and the decommissioning of the existing Cairns Hill one.

Irish Water says the upgrading i of the existing Foxes Den plant ensures that it can meet the current water demand whilst w also providing capacity to meet m future development needs.

The Foxes Den facility is a modern plant which has the adequate barriers required for delivering quality water. Providing P additional capacity at this plant was found to be more cost effective than trying to completely refurbish the older Cairns Hill plant where the treatment process resulted in the scheme being at risk of failing to meet all drinking water quality standards.

Irish Water says it is committed to addressing the shortcomings in drinking water treatment on the Lough Talt Regional Water Supply, the only other Sligo supply on the Remedial Action List
