Council approves Green Fort Plan

-

A conservation plan to protect and showcase the hidden histories right in the centre of our city has been given the go-ahead from Sligo County Council.

Councillors approved the plan presented by Heritage Officer Siobhán Ryan at the December Council meeting last week.

It was proposed by Cllr Declan Bree and seconded by Cllr Thomas Healy.

Cllr Bree said the plan marked a milestone in the long campaign by Forthill Men’s Group and its officers Johnny Stanford and John Joe Rooney.

“The Plan will require resources and I expect that the Heritage Office and the Council will make the necessary submissions for funding in due course,” he added.

Cllr Healy said he thought it was a “great project” and something from the past the Council could monetise in future.

“We have Carrowmore Tombs as well - both sites compliment one another,” he told the meeting. Cllr Gino O’Boyle said the plan would be “great for the town.”
