Teaching about litter through use of puppets

-

AN Anti-Litter initiative is being undertaken for primary schools by Sligo Counjty Council through the Anti-Litter and Anti- Graffiti Awareness Grant scheme.

A number of schools throughout the county are currently being visited by Bruscar and Poopy Puppy.

Bruscar is a litter loving alien while his pet, Poopy Puppy, lives up to his name as he is constantly leaving his “calling card” on pavements! Fortunately the junior pupils of the local primary schools are participating in the An Taisce Green Schools initiative and are able to teach both Bruscar and Poopy Puppy the error of their ways.

The children show Bruscar how to take his litter and Poopy Puppy’s calling card home with him.

The children also teach Bruscar what litter can be recycled and how to do that correctly. At the end of each workshop the children put their recycling skills into action and make beautiful Christmas tree baubles out of old newspapers and old Christmas wrapping paper to take home with them so as to encourage further discussion about litter and waste with their own families.

Workshop presenter, Martina Butler, an Environmental Education facilitator who works as a Heritage specialist with the Heritage Council’s Heritage in Schools scheme, created the puppet characters, Bruscar and Poopy Puppy, making them out of recycled materials.

She has been visiting primary schools thoughout the County.
