New Casual Trading Bye-Laws to be introduced for summer 2018

-

SELLING your produce in Sligo could become a whole lot easier next year.

New Casual Trading Bye-Laws are expected to come into force in time for the 2018 summer tourist season.

Councillor Chris MacManus tabled a motion calling for the new bye-laws to include farmer’s markets in public spaces, pop-up food and drinks carts at Council recreational and leisure areas and free standing stalls at selected urban, rural and coastal locations that would enhance Sligo’s offering along the Wild Atlantic Way.

Cllr MacManus said that the Market Yard where markets currently run were “not exactly salubrious” and didn’t have the footfall traders would like. He said there was no facility for a farmer’s market in Stephen Street car park and thought Sligo was not using its riverbank facilities to the full.

He also said there were no facilities in Strandhill for casual trading. “A public lottery is needed so that there is no sense of ownership over trading bays,” he said.

The Council said they hoped to have new bye-laws in place for the start of summer 2018.
