Summerhill first years are runners up in League decider

James Donlon and Mark McDaniel all got a point each in a cool Connacht Centre of Excellence in Bekan. How- ever, Athen- ry brought it back to a level game on 11 minutes, a great ball from Martin who seemed to be towering above the other players on the field fed Kieran O’Connor who then found the net for the Galway side. O’Connor added another point and a free as Athenry then went three in front when midfielder Daire McCarthy pointed from play on 25 minutes.
Down the other end Niland saw his goal chance saved by the Athenry goalkeeper. They scored their second goal four minutes from half-time, Martin again involved as Rory Fitzpatrick found the net. Moments later Summerhill keeper Ben Gavin, who pulled off a number of fine saves throughout, denied Athenry’s third goal before the interval. A fine score from Donlon brought it back to a five-point game as Summerhill were keeping Athenry without a score until the 50th minute as Summerhill’s Benedict Nwani saw his shot come off the crossbar.
With Summerhill trailing by five they needed a goal but instead it was Athenry’s Martin who sealed the win on 59 minutes when he found the net.
Summerhill’s young charges, who defeated St Jarlath’s in the semi-final, can be very proud of their campaign.
