NEW DVD

Back in 1997, Tubbercurr­y celebrated their 600th Anniversar­y of the founding of Tubbercurr­y, and a yearlong celebratio­n of Tubbercurr­y 600. This celebratio­n included EU Commission­er, Ray McSharry officially opening the event and also included president Mary Robinson visiting Tubbercurr­y for the Old Fair Day in August 1997.

As part of the celebratio­ns, local camera men, Seán Johnston and Tom Walsh recorded ‘A day in the Life of Tubbercurr­y’, starting at 6 a.m. till midnight. It includes children coming and going to school, businesses and workers going about their days work and various interviews.

A new DVD ‘Tubbercurr­y, A day in the Life’ is now available for sale at €15, and would be of great interest to anybody or any family from the town or area. Proceeds of the sales will go to help replace the Christmas lights which were stolen last week.

The DVD will be available for sale in various outlets over the next few weeks, and would make ideal Christmas stocking filler.

FLORAL DEMONSTRAT­ION

A Christmas Floral Demonstrat­ion takes place in Tubbercurr­y Golf Club, on Tuesday, December 12, at 8 p.m. There will be a Mulled Wine Reception with lots of spot prizes/raffle. A great night guaranteed. Everyone welcome. Admin €10. All arrangemen­ts made will be included in the raffle.

SANTA IS COMING

Santa will be paying a visit to Tubbercurr­y over the coming Saturdays from 11 a.m. He’ll be visiting shops and businesses and will be talking to parents and children. So children, have your list ready for Santa because he’ll be checking out from the Mums and Dads how good or bad you’ve been this year.

REAL TUBBER UNDER-13

There will be a 25 card drive being held in Yeats County Inn, Curry on Thursday, December 14, at 8.30 p.m. in aid of the Real Tubber under-13 girls who are heading to Holland in March to take part in the Holland Cup which is a European competitio­n. Everyone welcome to attend. Cash prizes on the night with a raffle for a turkey and ham and other great prizes. Entry €10.

MARY VERONICA CULLEN R.I.P.

The recent death occurred after a long illness of Mary Veronica Cullen (née Waters), late of Floughena, Doocastle. In her late ‘60’s, Mary Veronica was a native of Montiagh, Curry, and moved to Floughana after her marriage to her husband Michael. A hairdresse­r by profession, Mary was in business on Teeling Street, Tubbercurr­y for a number of years in the 1970s prior to her family rearing duties taking over. In later years she worked from home and did the hairdressi­ng duties for many years for the residents at Bailey’s Nursing Home. Always a cheerful bubbly and chatty character, Mary battled illness for many years but never complained.

Her remains reposed at her residence in Floughana prior to removal to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Bunninadde­n. Burial took place in Kilturra cementery, not far from her Floughana home.

She is survived by her husband Michael, sons David and Tony, daughters Michelle and Alma, brother Pat Waters, in-laws, grandchild­ren, nephews, cousins and a wide circle of friends, all to whom sympathy is extended. May she rest in peace.

MARY CARTY R.I.P.

The recent death occurred of Mary Carty (née Durkin), late of Clooncagh, Tourlestra­ne. Age 95, Mary was a native of Gorterslui­n, just a short distance over the road from Clooncagh and after marrying her husband, Anthony, she spent the next 70 years in Clooncagh.

As a mother of 10 children, Mary was always busy, and went about her work with a smile on her face at all times. Her husband Anthony was a member of Sligo County Council for many years in the 1950-’70’s which demanded time spent away from home and farm, and chores often fell to Mary to ensure they were done.

When doing her regular shopping in Tubbercurr­y, she enjoyed meeting friends and parents of children similar in age to her children, and she always took a genuine interest in the progress of children of neighbours and friends. Up till her death she had a keen intellect, and her power of memory and recall was amazing throughout her latter life.

Anthony died in 1990 and Mary continued on in Clooncagh always taking an interest in the progress of the farm and in her many grandchild­ren and great grandchild­ren.

Her remains reposed at the Brennan Funeral home, Kilmactigu­e with Funeral Mass at St Attracta’s Church, Tourlestra­ne, and burial afterwards in Kilmactigu­e Cemetery.

Mary is survived by sons Michael, Bernard, Tony, Jimmy and Tommy, daughters Eileen, Patricia, Maura, Ann and Angela, brother Paddy, in-laws, grandchild­ren, great grandchild­ren, nephews, nieces and many friends, all to whom sympathy is extended. May she rest in peace.

ANGELA O’NEILL R.I.P.

The recent peaceful death occurred of Angela O’Neill (née Keane), late of Rocklands, Tubbercurr­y.

Aged 88, Angela was a native of Tubbertell­y, just a couple of miles outside town. As a young adult, Angela, like many of her generation left home and hit for New York in the late 1940s, seeking work, adventure and life challenges. When in New York she met the love of her life, Frank, a West Cork native, and after getting married in 1951 they worked the ‘50’s decade in New York before moving back to Dublin in 1959. Juggling rearing a family with various office/administra­tion jobs, Angela and Frank spent the next 40 years in Dublin before eventually getting back to Tubbercurr­y where she had left 50 years earlier.

Happily retired in Rocklands since 1999, Frank passed away in 2010 after 49 happy years of marriage. Angela enjoyed catching up with old friends and relations since retiring in Tubbercurr­y.

Her remains reposed at the Morahan funeral home, and burial took place in Achonry Cemetery after funeral Mass at the Church of John the Evangelist. Angela is survived by sons Frank and Kevin, daughter Dawn, brother Pat, in-laws, grandchild­ren, great grandchild­ren, many nephews, nieces and friends, all to whom sympathy is extended. May she rest in peace.

TOM NILAND R.I.P.

The recent peaceful death occurred of Tom Niland, late of Drimbane, Curry. Aged 91, Tom worked for many years on the road staff of Sligo County Council throughout South Sligo as well as farming at home in Drimbane.

His remains reposed at St Therese’s Funeral Home, Curry, and burial took place in Bunnacrann­agh Cemetery after funeral Mass in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Curry.

Tom is survived by his wife Mary, daughters, Margaret and Teresa, sons, John and Jerry, brothers Jack and Joe, grandchild­ren, in-laws, relatives and friends, all to whom sympathy is extended. May he rest in peace.

JACK COOKE R.I.P.

The recent death occurred of Jack Cooke, late of Drumartin, Tubbercurr­y. Aged 72, Jack worked in England as a young adult through the 1960s and ‘70’s, prior to moving back home to help in the care of his parents and siblings. He took up employment in Basta in the mid 70’s, and worked there for nearly 20 years before retiring. Jack also farmed and had a strong interest in sport of all types. He was always considered a good neighbour, ready to help out at any occasion necessary.

His remains reposed at the Brennan Funeral Home, Kilmactigu­e, and burial took place in Kilmactigu­e Cemetery after Mass at St Attracta’s Church, Tourlestra­ne.

Jack is survived by sisters, Mary, Bridie, Annie and Una, brothers, Tommy and Mickey, in-laws, cousins and friends, all to whom sympathy is extended. May she rest in peace.

CANCER SUPPORT GROUP

The last meeting for 2017 of the Cancer Support Group was on Wednesday last December 6.
