Calls for Regional Capital Status
SLIGO should be classified as regional capital for the Northwest region, a Fine Gael TD has said.
Sligo TD Tony McLoughlin made a strong case for the town at the Oireachtas Rural and Community Development Committee last week, and also raised the issue with Minister of State Damien English.
Deputy McLoughlin said: “Sligo is the biggest urban centre and economic hub in the entire Northwest region. However, the draft national planning framework completely overlooked this position and region in general. As such I believe that as it stands, the plan lacks the real ambition needed to grow the North West region.
“It lacks new thinking to address the urgent need for balanced regional development and it does not make me feel optimistic for the future of our region.
“A classification in the final planning framework draft for Sligo as a growth centre in the NorthWest is absolutely vital for the prosperity and growth of Sligo going forward.
“It is important for jobs, investment and improving access to the region.”
