Major investment in Garda Station

- By JENNY MCCUDDEN

Working in a place with ‘sewage issues’ can’t be pleasant.

This is just one of a series of well documented problems with the old building that houses Sligo Town Garda Station on Pearse Road.

The new head of Police for the division, Chief Superintendent Aidan Glacken says it is a priority for him to improve the current conditions at the North West HQ base.

“The station is an old building. It is not ideal but at the moment it is what we have and we have to make the best of it. I have given commitments that substantial improvement works will begin in 2018 including a new custody area,” he stresses.

Following a visit to the station by Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan a few weeks ago, it’s understood in the region of €1m will be spent ‘ to improve facilities for Garda members working there.’ Ancillary works will also be carried out, Chief Supt Glacken said, and the work will be completed during 2018.

Of course, the promise of a new Headquarters for the Sligo Leitrim Division of An Garda Síochána is still being talked about. As Chief Supt Glacken says: “The issue of a new station for Sligo has been on the cards for 20 years. I was glad to welcome the Minister here to Sligo two weeks ago and there is a commitment that a new station in Sligo is a priority. I will be working earnestly with the OPW to firstly secure a site and secondly commence the development of a new fit for purpose regional Headquarters.”He referred to the new stations in Galway, Kevin Street Dublin and Wexford. “This is what we want to see in Sligo.”
