Martin Kenny TD and Chris Mac Manus were both selected to contest the next general election for Sinn Fein in the Sligo/Leitrim, constituency. The party held two conventions for the constituency over the week-end. The two candidates also ran in the last general election in February 2016 with Kenny taking a seat.

Deputy Kenny said: “I am delighted to be selected and will continue to work for people all across this constituency. There are many issues that affect the people of this region from waiting lists in our hospitals, to rural decline, to access to mental health services. We need investment in basic infrastructure such as upgrading our road network and broadband network which is vital for job creation.” Councillor Chris MacManus was selected at a convention on Sunday evening in The Glasshouse Hotel.

Cllr MacManus said: “In 2016, I was very close and was the last candidate eliminated with over seven thousand votes. Thirteen other candidates went out before me, including sitting TDs and Senators. I’m in this to win. He said people from the northwest were tired of being treated as second-class citizens.” He added that if elected he would not take home the full TD salary. “Sinn Fein is not in politics for monetary gain, we are in it to bring about progressive political change.,” he said.
