Promoting Traveller mental health issues

-

THE suicide prevention charity Pieta House is providing information leaflets to the Travelling community on how to seek support if a person or loved one is suffering from mental health issues over the festive period, according to the Sligo Traveller Support Group (STSG.

The organisation is encouraging everyone to make a special effort to look after their mental health and to reach out to support those around them who may be experiencing a difficult time.

Spokesman Jamie Murphy said: “Promoting a message about positive mental health is one that everyone should take heed of, especially at this time of year. From our perspective we are focusing on the Traveller community due to the shocking rates of suicide compared to the rest of the population.”

According to the All-Ireland Traveller Health Study (AITHS) the suicide rate is seven times higher for Traveller men compared to the rest of the population. The figure is six times higher for Traveller women. Jamie continues: “There are a whole variety of reasons for this ranging from discrimination, exclusion, lack of employment and education opportunities, and poor accommodation provision and these are issues which must be dealt with.

“The key message we are trying to get out is to seek help whether its through family, friends, GP, nurse, mental health charities or organisations like ourselves. Our campaign is to provide information.”
