AN HONOUR FOR EVERYONE
THE unsung heroes of Sligo were thrilled to get recognised last Wednesday evening.
Mary Dolan, of the Calry Local History Society, told The Sligo Champion: “It was an absolute honour to be presented with such a prestigious award.
“Not only was it an honour to receive the award but it was also an honour to meet the other recipients, who came from all aspects of society.
“It was also brilliant to see younger members of society from the Sligo Grammar School being awarded.”
On the topic of Sligo County Council, Mary said: “Sligo County Council has been a great help and support to us the whole way.”
During 2017 the society has organised a number of events that have celebrated the environment, local writers and the oral tradition of storytelling and they are now in the midst of planning a number of exciting events for Heritage Week 2018.
Mary Mc Loughlin of the Sligo Stoma Support Group was also part of a group honoured on the night. She said: “It was so overwhelming and such an honour for the whole group.
“I really hope that through this award and the publicity surrounding it, it will raise more awareness for the Sligo Stoma Support group and that anyone who may need support with Stoma or related illnesses will know they have a place to turn to for support.
“I think everyone attending the award felt very special that night and the atmosphere and tone at the Council Chambers was quite remarkable.
“Everyone there was shocked that they had won. When you spend time volunteering, you really don’t think or expect that you will receive an award for it – but it is really lovely to have been given this honour.
Albert Bree, who was the previous Chair Person for the Sligo Storm Support Group sadly passed away this year but Mary was sure that wherever he is looking down from now, he would have been thrilled.
She also expressed her extreme gratitude to Sinead Moore, who originally nominated the group for this award.
