The Sligo Champion

Glencar/Manor host match for late Mark

-

A match is taking place on St Stephen’s Day in memory of local sportsman Mark Rooney who sadly died last year.

Mark, from Glencar, was a keen sportsman all his life, and was involved with many GAA and soccer clubs. He also played golf with Co Sligo Golf Club and his teammates there dedicated their AIG Senior Cup win to Mark shortly after he died.

Mark also played with Strand Celtic, Manor Rangers, Sligo Rovers, St Mary’s and Glencar/ Manorhamilton.

The match on St Stephen’s Day is being organised by both Glencar/Manorhamilton and St Mary’s, two clubs Mark played with.

The clubs invite people to keep the date free and the match will see Glencar/Manorhamilton taking on St Mary’s in what should be an entertaining encounter.

The theme this year is Linking the Ages. At 1pm St Mary’s vs Glencar/Manorhamilton (Selection of players from 2007-2017 roughly).

This will then be followed by a short exhibition game where the St Mary’s and Glencar Manor U8, U10 and U12 teams will display their skills for all to see.

The finale will see all the “Golden Oldies” dust down their puma kings and battle it out for 30 minutes. Refreshments will be available in the clubhouse, with all live horse racing and premiership matches on the TV.

There will be a bucket collection on the day with all monies raised going to charity.

Current and former players are asked to contact Dominic Kelly if they are available on the day.

Last year’s game was a fantastic occasion and they hope to see you all again.

The Rooney family are heavily involved in sport, Mark’s brother Aidan managed the successful Sligo minors two years ago and Glencar/Manor this year, while nephew Nathan plays with St Mary’s and Sligo.
