The Sligo Champion

Cornview flying high in the Astro League

-

FOLEYS Bar met the Sally Gardens on Tuesday in the Sligo Rovers Astro League knowing a win was vital in order to maintain their push for top spot in the league. However they were held to a 2-2 draw by the Ballisadare men and as a result Cornview were crowned pre Christmas champions, being four points clear at the top with one game to go.

It has been a highly impressive campaign by Cornview thus far, suffering just the one defeat in their 11 league games to date, winning the other 10.

A special mention must be given to their goal machine Gareth Kelly, who notched an incredible 21 goals in 11 games. In order to mark his incredible achievement, Gareth Kelly will be presented with the leading goal scorer award tomorrow night in his side’s final league game before the league takes a break for Christmas. Similarly, table toppers Cornview will also be presented with a voucher for finishing first, while runners up Foleys Bar will also receive a consolation prize.

The battle for a top six finish proved just as intriguing and went down to the final game of the season. GSS put four past Inter Inferno on Wednesday last to secure a sixth place finish on goal difference, ensuring Premier division football for the boys in blue in January. Forrest Celtic were also awarded top flight status after finishing a very commendable fifth.

There is one league game taking place tomorrow night at 8pm, with Cornview taking on second place Foleys Bar. The league will then take a break for Christmas, and return on January 3rd for the first round of the open cup. Shane Crossan Co-ordinator of the league said: “I would like to personally thank all of the managers, players and sponsors for their continued commitment to the Sligo Rovers Astro League. “The standard of football has been very high this year and has proved extremely competitive which is great to see. I would like to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and we will see you all again in the New Year”.

The transfer window will be open from December 20th so if any player is interested in joining the league they can contact the league on Facebook through the “srfc astro league” page.
