CHRISTMAS DAY SWIM

The 14th annual Lough Arrow Christmas Day swim will take place at 1 p.m. at Brick Pier with registrati­on from 12.30 p.m. All proceeds will go to the NorthWest Hospice. DJ and drinks on the day with all welcome to attend. A rugby jersey signed by Gordon Darcy will be raffled on the day.

The annual St Stephen’s Day Treasure Hunt in aid of hospice will take place in Lough Key Forest and Activity Park on Tuesday, December 26, at 2.30 p.m. Informatio­n sheets will be given out in Answer the park and completed sheets to be handed in at Clarke’s Bar and Restaurant, St Patrick’s Street, Boyle where winners will be announced.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

Thank you to all the people involved in putting up the Collooney Christmas Lights – the town looks fabulously festive. Despite very cold weather last Sunday evening there was a great turnout for the turning on of the lights by our new mayor of Collooney – John Walsh. John has taken over from the outgoing Mayor Daniel Gallagher.

Local Gardaí were on hand to help Santa out when his sleigh broke down en route to Collooney and pupils from Scoil Mhuire agus Iosaf provided beautiful seasonal music. Thanks to all involved.

SCOIL MHUIRE & IOSAF

Congratula­tions to Matthew Gorman, Aleksandra Gwizdz, Roisín Mooney, Marty Daskalov, Seán Walsh, Ella Doherty, Kya McKenna, Adam Jones, Noah Hartigan and Ella Aldridge, who have been elected to the newly formed Student Council in Scoil Mhuire agus Iosaf. This new initiative give all pupils a voice and they can bring any concerns or ideas to the meetings. There were some strong campaigns in the run up to the elections but the student speeches on the day swayed the voters in favour of the 10 elected representa­tives. Well done guys.

Collooney Handball Club are soon starting classes for children age 7/8 years and older. The fantastic facility that’s on our doorstep in Collooney is undergoing additional works which will ensure it’s one of the most stateof-the-art facilities in the country. Geevagh LOTTO DRAW

The Geevagh Community Resource lotto draw was held in Paddy’s Bar on Saturday, December, ninth for a jackpot of €10,200. The numbers drawn were 3, 12, 16 and 28. There was no winner. The next draw for a jackpot of €10,300 will be held on Saturday, December 16, in Shivnan’s Bar. FIRST FRIENDS

First Friends Playschool hosted their annual Christmas Cookery Demonstrat­ion on Tuesday last in the Resource Centre. This was the fifth year of the event and it was a resounding success. Award winning chef, Lee Mastin, Head chef at the Draft House in Strandhill and Geevagh resident was the man of the moment and he provided the assembled audience with some mouth-watering recipes. There were a number of stalls present selling various items from homemade jams, knitting, firewood, hampers and lots more.

Also present on the night was Geevagh native, Maureen Harte Harkin signing copies of her book’ Love You Ma’. There were also a number of raffles on the night for a range of prizes which were generously sponsored. Check out Geevagh.ie for a look at all that was on offer on the night.

CONGRATULA­TIONS

Congratula­tions to Gary O’Reilly, who received a well-deserved award recently. The county final of Irelands Young Entrepeneu­r competitio­n took place recently in City Hall and Gary won the award in the Best Start up Business category. His business, Gary O’Reilly Internatio­nal Choreograp­hy is now a well-known operation all over the world. Gary is wished continued success with his venture.

DEATH

The death occurred recently in Middlesex, England of Michael Kennedy, formerly of Ummeryroe, Geevagh. He is survived by his wife Kathleen, son Paul and daughter Geraldine. Also by his brothers, Peter, Geevagh and Tommy, Mullingar. A month’s mind Mass will be celebrated in Geevagh on Friday, December 22, at 8 p.m. May he rest in peace.

Tubbercurr­y HOLY FAMILY NS

Christmas preparatio­ns are in full flow in Holy Family NS Parents and grandparen­ts are invited to the school to see the children’s Christmas Shows. Junior Infants to third class will perform their shows on Monday the 18th from 1.30 p.m.

Plays from fourth, fifth and sixth class will take place on Tuesday the 19th from 1 p.m. Thanks to the teachers and the children for all their work and to the parents’ associatio­n for helping out.

The Green School Committee are collecting food for the St Vincent de Paul. Families are asked to send in non-perishable goods to the Green School Committee. The children will put the food in hampers for the St Vincent de Paul.

The Active School Committee launched their year’s work on Thursday, December 14. Demort McDermot will help out with some activities. Children were invited to wear Christmas jumpers, Christmas hats or even a Christmas decoration.

Thanks to Ms Cooney and the Heath Promoting School Committee for organising Odd Socks Day.

NEW PUB OPENING

Congratula­tions to the O’Connor family, Tubbercurr­y on the opening of their new high spec pub the O’C. It will be managed by Shane and Paul, sons of Anne and the late Pat. Located in the former pub known as ‘The Forge’ and previous to that as ‘Neary’s’, this upgrade and opening is a great vote of confidence in the local hostelry/pub/food business in the town, and will give a new option for people when out socialisin­g. Well done and best wishes.

SHOE BOX

Best wishes is extended to Michelle Skeffingto­n, who recently took over the management of the Shoe Box on Teeling Street, Tubbercurr­y. The Shoe Box was establishe­d and run for over 10 years by Marian Jones and Bernie Mulgrew, and it grew into a thriving business. Michelle recently returned from Canada, where she worked for a number of years, and has now taken over its management. She will be delighted to meet all former customers and hopes for their continued support.

ST STEPHEN’S DAY RUN

South Sligo Athletic Club are holding a 5K Fun Run on St Stephen’s Day in aid of SHOUT (Sligo Hospital Oncology Unit Trust). Registrati­on takes place in St Brigid’s Hall at 11.30 a.m., and the Run commences at midday. Walkers, Joggers and runners are welcome to this family friendly event. Christmas jumpers encouraged. Tea and refreshmen­ts afterwards in St Brigid’s Hall.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

The Christmas lights in Tubbercurr­y look great after their re-modelling following the theft of the existing sets. Well done to all those involved in fundraisin­g of the new lights and a big thank you to the individual­s and busi- nesses who dug deep into their pockets for this community effort.

NEW DVD

Back in 1997, Tubbercurr­y celebrated their 600th Anniversar­y of the founding of Tubbercurr­y, and a yearlong celebratio­n of Tubbercurr­y 600. This celebratio­n included EU Commission­er, Ray McSharry officially opening the event and also included president Mary Robinson visiting Tubbercurr­y for the Old Fair Day in August 1997.

As part of the celebratio­ns, local camera men, Seán Johnston and Tom Walsh recorded ‘A day in the Life of Tubbercurr­y’, starting at 6 a.m. till midnight. It includes children coming and going to school, businesses and workers going about their days work and various interviews.

A new DVD ‘Tubbercurr­y, A day in the Life’ is now available for sale at €15, and would be of great interest to anybody or any family from the town or area. Proceeds of the sales will go to help replace the Christmas lights which were stolen recently. The DVD is available for sale in various outlets, and would make an ideal Christmas stocking filler.

SANTA CLAUS

Santa will be paying a visit to Tubbercurr­y over the coming Saturdays from 11 a.m. He’ll be visiting shops and businesses and will be talking to parents and children. So children, have your list ready for Santa because he’ll be checking out from the Mums and Dads whose been naughty and whose been nice throughout the year. An Chroi, South Sligo Enterprise Centre.

CLOONACOOL CHARITY MATCH

Cloonacool GAA club are holding a charity match in aid of ‘Operation Walk Ireland’ on St Stephen’s’s day in Cloonacool Community Park at 2 p.m. In order to raise much needed funds to support a team of medical volunteers who will travel to Vietnam in March 2018. A team of doctors and nurses which will include local girl Mary Marren from Carrowreag­h Knox, who is a nurse in the Galway Clinic, will travel to Asia to carry out much needed knee and hip replacemen­ts, and also to provide education to the local medical teams. We are asking as many people as possible to turn out and support this charity event for a very worthy cause.

WRITERS GROUP

The Tubbercurr­y writing group have now finished up for the Christmas break, but will resume again on Friday, January 12, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

MARY SWEENEY R.I.P.

The recent death occurred of Mary Sweeney, Long Island, New York and originally from Tullycushe­en, Tubbercurr­y. In her late 80’s, Mary spent all her adult life in New York, having been there for nearly 60 years in total. She did manage to get home on a number of occasions, and always considered Tullycushe­en as home. It was her wish that her remains would be brought home to Ireland to be buried here. Her remains reposed at the Morahans Funeral Home with removal to St John Evangelist Church, Tubbercurr­y. Burial took place in Rhue Cemetery. Mary is survived by her brothers Jimmy and Tommy, sister Ann, and various relations, all to whom sympathy is extended. May she rest in peace.

MARY KATE WALSH R.I.P.

The recent peaceful death occurred of Mary Kate Walshe (née Carr) late of Banada, at St Attracta’s Nursing Home. In her 90th year, Mary Kate came from the Tourlestra­ne Parish and was a well known and popular figure in the local community for many decades. Her remains reposed at Coens Funeral Home prior to removal to St Attracta’s Church, Tourlestra­ne. Burial took place in Banada Abbey Cemetery, beside where she lived for nearly 60 years. She is survived by her sons Austin (Banada) and Jimmy (Dowros), daughters Breege McDonnell (Killasser), Margaret Meers (Aclare) and Catherine Carroll (Drumcliff), brother Jim Carr, daughters and sons-inlaws, grandchild­ren, nephews, nieces and other relatives, all to whom sympathy is extended. May she rest in peace.

JAMES COLEMAN R.I.P.

The death occurred peacefully in September of James Snr (Jimmy) Coleman, late of Bunninadde­n. In his 91st year, Jimmy was a primary school teacher all his working life, working in a number of schools including, principal of Bunninadde­n Primary school. Jimmy was an active man who enjoyed outdoor activities. He was pre-deceased some years ago by his wife Tessie. In recent years, he had failing health and was lovingly looked after by his daughter Ann. His remains reposed at the residence of his daughter Ann Gorman, Tubbercurr­y prior to removal to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Bunninadde­n. Burial took place in St Columba’s Cemetery, Ballymote. Jimmy is survived by daughters Helen Morris (Lucan), Ann Gorman (Tubbercurr­y), Jacinta Brennan (Bundoran), sons Bobby (Tallagh), James (Bunninadde­n) and David (Castlebar), in-laws, grandchild­ren, great grandchild­ren, nephews, nieces and may friends, all to whom sympathy is extended. May he rest in peace.

BRIDGET MOFFITT R.I.P.

The recent death occurred of Bridget Moffitt (née Maye), late of Moylough, Tubbercurr­y. In her mid 80’s, Bridget was a local Moylough girl who married locally and was a hard worker who helped her husband Michael with all farm chores. After her husband died, she continued to take a keen interest in all farming matters along with her son Tom.

Her remains reposed at the Coens Funeral home prior to removal to St Patrick’s Church, Moylough. Burial took place in Rhue Cemetery.

Bridget is survived by sons Henry (London), Dan (Dublin), Tom (Moylough), and daughter Geraldine Hannon (Sligo), in-laws, grandchild­ren, nieces, nephews, cousins and good neighbours, all to whom sympathy is extended. May she rest in peace.
