Cannabis in pillowcase

-

A student was found with ¤400 of cannabis herb in his pillow case after a Garda raid on his accommodation.

Ben James Galgey (19) of Rossinver Road, Kiltyclogher, Leitrim, was charged with the unlawful possession of cannabis and possession for sale or supply at Glenard Estate, Ballinode, 25th October 2016.

Inspector Paul Kilcoyne told the court that a search was carried out at the accommodation in Ballinode under the Drugs Act and Galgey told them where the drugs were.

The court heard he had no previous convictions.

Mr Gerard McGovern, defending, said Galgey was “frank and honest” with the Gardaí and fully co-operated with them.

“He showed them where the cannabis was in the pillow,” he said, adding that Galgey had not come to the notice of Gardaí since.

He said Galgey was a student living with a group of other parties who were also smoking the cannabis.

He asked Judge Kilrane not to convict his client as he was a “decent young man” who “just got in the way of smoking it.”

Judge Kilrane said it was “a significant quantity” of drugs found but adjourned sentencing to 13th December 2018 to monitor Galgey.

He said if Galgey didn’t commit any other offence before then, he would then strike out the matter.
