Interesting items of your work or social activities can be written in to Roger McCarrick or emailed to the address below. Best wishes to all.

BLOOD DONOR CLINIC

The next Blood Donation Clinic will be on Thursday, January 4, in St Brigid’s Hall, Tubbercurry from 4.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. As always and especially after Christmas, the call goes out; Blood is in short supply and everyone who can should consider donating. It is a wonderful act of caring for others; a genuine gift of life to a person in desperate need. Someone will live because you give. Better than any other gift given at Christmas. Within three weeks of donating you can be assured your blood will have assisted in saving someone’s life. No greater gift is possible. Visit giveblood.ie or LoCall 1850 731 137 if you want to learn more about giving blood.

MS THERAPY CENTRE

Eileen Murtagh, on behalf of the North West Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre, Sligo and the Thursday morning Ladies Group, wish to thank sincerely all those who supported their fundraising efforts this year. Over €3,000 has been donated to the centre, from Eileen’s Tea Day, the Quilt Raffle and selling Christmas Cards in SuperValu, and we are especially grateful to Geroid Surlis for this facility. Wishing everyone a Peaceful Christmas and Happy 2018.

MARY GAVIGAN R.I.P.

The peaceful death occurred earlier this year of Mary Gavigan (née O’Grady) of Doomore, Tubbercurry. In her early 80’s, Mary was pre-deceased some years ago by her husband Tom.

Born and reared in Doomore, Mary was a very pleasant outgoing lady who was a great neighbour to those in her community, and enjoyed helping her husband Tom with the farming chores. She was very proud of the turkeys she and Tom reared and sold for the Christmas market and Doomore turkey was a feature on the menu in local hotels and restaurants.

Mary is survived by sons, Fr Joseph and Martin, daughters Anne, Geraldine, Sheila and Claire, her many loving grandchildren, in-laws and relations, all to whom sympathy is extended. May she rest in peace.

LOUIS MCDONAGH R.I.P.

The unexpected death occurred earlier this year of Louis McDonagh, late of Ballincurry, Curry. In his late 60’s, Louis was a native of Tubbercurry, having spent his early life living at home opposite Rathscanlon Creamery.

Son of the late Tanse and Mary Agnes, Louis hit for London as a teenager, like a lot of his generation in search of employment and finished up spending nearly 30 years there. He was involved in the construction business, and specifically steel fixing. The family returned to Ireland when they purchased their home and farm at Ballincurry.

Since his retirement from full time employment, Louis was a regular visitor to Tubbercurry where most of the house shopping was done, and he thoroughly enjoyed keeping up to date with local happenings around town. An avid GAA fan, he shared his allegiances with both Curry and Tubbercurry, as relatives were involved at a high level with both clubs. He was always happy once the best team won.

Louis is survived by his wife Carmel, daughter Siobhán, son James, grandson Daithí, brothers Henry and Frances, sisters Bridie, Mary, Margaret and Teresa, inlaws, nephews, nieces and many relations and friends, all to whom sympathy is extended. May he rest in peace.

‘DAY IN THE LIFE’ DVD

Back in 1997, Tubbercurry celebrated their 600th Anniversary of the founding of Tubbercurry, and a yearlong celebration of Tubbercurry 600. This celebration included EU Commissioner, Ray McSharry officially opening the event and also included president Mary Robinson visiting Tubbercurry for the Old Fair Day in August 1997.As part of the celebrations, local camera men, Seán Johnston and Tom Walsh recorded ‘A day in the Life of Tubbercurry’, starting at 6 a.m. till midnight. It includes children coming and going to school, businesses and workers going about their days work and various interviews.

A new DVD ‘Tubbercurry, A day in the Life’ is now available for sale at €15, and would be of great interest to anybody or any family from the town or area. Proceeds of the sales will go to help replace the Christmas lights which were stolen recently. The DVD is available for sale in various outlets, and would make an ideal present.

BIRTHDAY WISHES

Luke Kilcoyne, well known grey hound trainer, and Gaelic Football analysis, recently celebrated his 80th Birthday in the company of family and friends. Well known in many local and national circles, he is a true example of keeping fully active in retirement, and he is one of the youngest looking octogenarians ever.
