ST STEPHEN’S DAY 5K

The people of South Sligo and surrounding areas were out in force to support the 5k charity run in aid of a very worthy cause, SHOUT (Sligo Hospital Oncology Unit Trust). This great event has being going from strength to strength since its first race six years ago.

This year was bigger and better with just under 400 people, young and old, taking to the streets of Tubbercurry. There was a very noticeable increase in families who took part this year, adding greatly to his special event. God himself played a huge part with the rays of sunshine beating down on everybody.

Gerry Lee, chairman, welcomed everybody at the start of the race, in a packed St Brigid’s Hall and acknowledged the great support received by both walkers and runners. You could hear a pin drop as Gerry acknowledged Tom Normanly, who sadly passed away earlier in the year. Gerry welcomed Marie, family and friends and explained that in Tom’s memory a memorial shield would be presented to the first junior (under 18 years) to cross the line.

Tom was an avid supporter of the run for the past few years. He completed it two years ago and was encouraging his own family and all who took part last year as they neared the finish line. Tom was too well aware of the support and facilities provided by SHOUT God played his part but there is no doubt that Tom had a word and was with everybody in spirit. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam dhílis.

Afterwards refreshments were provided and everybody mingled and chatted to discuss the Christmas festivities. Children huddled together showing each other and discussing what that great man Santa Claus brought.

Prizes were presented to first male Dermot McDermott, first female Mari Johnston, first junior female Maeve Gallagher. First junior male home and winner of the Tom Normanly memorial shield was Barry Clavin. The Thornton family (including Holly the dog) were winners of the fancy dress/best Christmas jumper prize.

A special presentation (South Sligo singlet) was made to Sharon Argenio, sister of Donal Kerins, club member. Sharon and family had travelled from Colorado arriving in Dublin Airport at 5 a.m. that morning and travelled down especially to take part in the run. Gerry was delighted to announce at the time that €3,700 was raised and they were still counting money that were coming in.

South Sligo AC wishes to thank all those who sponsored and volunteered to organise this great event but in particular all those who supported and donated very generously. Please pencil this social event of the year into your diaries for next year.
