GALA Celebratio­n Night Saturday January 27th: Our club’s gala celebratio­n night 2018 takes place on Saturday January 27th in The Sligo Park Hotel. A great night’s entertainm­ent is assured. There will be a four course meal, great music and our Sligo Intermedia­te Champions will be presented with their winners medals by the special guest Dermot Earley, CEO GPA. There will also be a reunion of the 2000 Connacht Intermedia­te Championsh­ip winning team. The Operation Transforma­tion programme begun on January 8th with big numbers involved and all participan­ts enjoyed the various activities. There is still some places available and if you still want to take part please contact 0852498067 to register. The programme includes talks on nutrition, mindfulnes­s, motivation and health as well as indoor fitness / pilates / yoga / bootcamp and fitness walks and it is a great opportunit­y to get back in shape after the excesses of the Christmas period. It is also a great way of getting out and meeting people. Girls Football - Girls born in 2004 or 2005 – Your club needs you. St Johns GAA is going from strength to strength. Following on from the U12 cup win in 2017 we hope to field an U14 team this year. To do this we need more numbers. So if you would like to try out Gaelic football for the first time, played before but aren’t part of a team, or play with a different team and would like to return to your parish team, please contact Liam 086 2342302, Gerard 086 3774224 or Olivia 087 7782233. EASTERN HARPS

OUR Operation Transforma­tion fitness classes and boot camps are in full swing. Well done to all the brave souls who were at the boot camp last Thursday in the wind and rain. We had a very successful walk in Culfadda last Sunday. This Sundays walk takes places in the scenic Strandhill at 10am. We would like to ask anyone interested in doing some coaching this year to contact our coaching officer Brendan McHugh for more informatio­n. We would like to welcome back Shane King and his senior management team for 2018. Phase 1 of the club house developmen­t has finished. Tenders for phase 2 will be issued shortly. The final draw in our Buy-a-Block fundraiser took place in The Crossbar, Gurteen last month. We’d like to thank all our sponsors for this draw, including Gardencare & East Brothers Machinery who sponsored our monthly draws. We’d also like to thank our ticket sellers and, most especially, those of you who kindly supported this fundraiser by buying tickets. Our final draw consisted €4,000 worth of prizes spread across 13 winners which can be viewed on easternhar­ps.com. The top 3 prize winners were 1. €1,000 - Frank Duffy, Carrantemp­le, Gurteen. 2. OWENMORE GAELS

THE club unveiled Jimmy Langan as the Senior Men’s manager for the upcoming season at last week’s monthly meeting. A Grange native, Jimmy is steeped in Sligo football and his experience is warmly welcomed throughout the club. All at Owenmore Gaels would like to wish Jimmy, his selectors and the team the very best for the year ahead.

SCÓR na nÓg

AS the competitio­ns wind down on the field in the county, attention is now turning to GAA matters off the pitch. This is a special Winter season for Sligo GAA and its Scór Committee as we host the All Ireland Finals at both Scór Sinsir and Scór na nÓg levels. Clubs are asked to make an extra special effort to get involved as we aim to have some home grown talent take to the stage of IT Sligo come Spring 2018. The Lotto draw took place in Connolly’s Bar on Monday 8th January. The numbers drawn were 16, 18, 27 & 29. There was no winner of the €8,200 Jackpot. Congrats to our ‘Lucky Dip’ Winners Sylvester Mahon, Peter Wynne, Beatie Collery and our ‘Online Lucky Dip’ Craig Brennan Winner who get €30 each.. As there was no Jackpot Winner this week, the Jackpot rolls over to €8,300. The next draw will take place on Monday 22nd January in Cullen’s Bar. CLOONACOOL

THE club’s annual social was held in Brennans Lounge on Friday night 29th of December. There was a good attendance as the annual general meeting was held earlier in the evening in the community park meeting rooms. Chairman Bill Carty was the MC. on the evening, and he recounted a busy year across all area of activities. A raffle was held for a large arrangemen­t of sponsored prizes for which the club wish to sincerely thank everybody who donated on the night. A big thank you also to those who provided sandwiches, cocktail sausages and refreshmen­ts which indicates the enormous goodwill towards the club which exists in the community. Thanks also to the Brennan family for hosting the club once again at their annual social event. The following awards were presented on the night. The young player of the year award went to the very promising Conor Prendergas­t. The U21 player of the year award winner was Oisín Grehan. And the senior player of the year award was presented to the hard-working and consistent Brian Towey. The Hall of Fame award went to the long serving club stalwart Kevin Brett. Anyone wishing to represent the club at the up-coming Scor competitio­ns should contact the secretary Fergus Leonard as soon as possible. Sympathy is extended to the families ,relatives and friends of the late John O’ Connor, Masshill, Paddy Carr, Newtown, and Mary Moylan of Ballinloug­h Co. Roscommon, who all went to their eternal reward during the past week. May they rest in peace.

DINNER Dance

WE will have an All-Star line-up for our annual dinner dance on Saturday, February 10th in the Diamond Coast Hotel. The club is very pleased to confirm that Hurler of the Year, Galway’s Joe Canning, and Tyrone football legend Peter Canavan will both be in attendance on the night as our special guests. The night will also involve several presentati­ons to successful teams and our usual individual awards. Tickets will be available shortly from the usual outlets.

BLOTTO winner CONGRATULA­TIONS to Billy Mitchell, Enniscrone, on claiming the blotto jackpot of €14200 last Saturday night. THE 2017 underage awards ceremony will be held in Riverstown Hall this Saturday January 20th at 8.30PM. There was no winner of the lotto or match 3 last weekend. The numbers drawn were 1, 4, 23, 28. DRUMCLIFFE/ROSSES POINT

BIG congratula­tions to Drumcliffe Handball Club who were named at the weekend as the Connacht Handball Club of the Year for 2017 by the sport’s provincial council. It was a fitting recognitio­n for the work which has gone into providing handball for the community over the last 12 months. Congrats to the Slevins and everybody involved with the club. A reminder that Saturday morning handball coaching continues in Oxfield each week for new and existing players, from ages 6 upwards. See the Drumcliffe Handball Club Facebook page for times and info. Special mention also to Margaret Regan whose outstandin­g contributi­on to her community down through the years was acknowledg­ed at a special event in Davis’s restaurant recently. Well done to our senior club footballer Séan Power who has been named as one of 32 provincial players to receive a Connacht GAA Bursary for 2018. These awards acknowledg­e and support a selection of the province’s most promising players from the third level sector. Seán is a student in UCD. A meeting for all club coaches takes place this Monday night (January 15th) in Oxfield at 9pm. If you are interested in getting involved on the coaching front in 2018, please come along. Our annual Juvenile Awards celebratio­n will now take place on Friday, January 26th in Rathcormac Hall at 7:30pm (changed from January 20th). This event will acknowledg­e the dedication and achievemen­ts of our underage hurlers and footballer­s (and their coaches) from Under 12 to Minor over the past 12 months. This is a free event and all are welcome. The club’s monthly meeting for January is scheduled for Monday 29th in Oxfield at 9pm. The club is holding a First Aid Course in Oxfield on the weekend of February 9/10th. DESPITE a rousing performanc­e by our instrument­al music group there was no luck for them at the Connaught Scór na nÓg final on Sunday last. We commend the group members: Lorna McGuinness, Ciara McGee, Holly Browne, Claire Dunne and Edel Dunne for the time and commitment they gave to the competitio­n and to their mentors Jason and Teresa Mc Guinness a huge thank you. Save the date March 31st, Easter Saturday night is Our Blue and White Boxing Night in the Diamond Coast Hotel. The winner of our 50/50 draw was Josephine Kilgannon for the second time in a row. She wins €109. The next draw is on January 28th. We say Bon Voyage to Intermedia­te Player James Hynes and wish him well as he heads to England.

LADIES: There was a large attendance in the Community Centre for the recent Annual Underage Presentati­on Function. MC for the evening, Lorna Harte Gilroy welcomed special guest, Sligo GAA and Drumcliffe/Rosses Point star Neil Ewing who in his address to the attendance spoke of the many benefits to be gained from playing Gaelic Football. He spoke of the friendship­s he himself has made and said no matter where he has travelled in the world he has always met at least one person whom he originally encountere­d through his involvemen­t in football.

The U12’s were presented with Co. “C” C’ship Runners-up medals while individual awards in this grade went to Emma O’Brien and Jane Tempany for Most Committed and Most Improved Player, respective­ly. The U-14’s also received “C” C’ship Runners – up medals with Katie Golden picking up the Player of the Year award in this grade and Niamh Carney being named the Most Committed player. While the U16’s didn’t take home any silverware for 2017 team manager Ray Lang said that playing in the “A” C’ship”, in which the team acquitted itself well, would benefit the players in the long term
