PADDY HUNT R.I.P.

The death occurred on Christmas Day of Patrick (Paddy Joe) Hunt, late of Chaffpool, Tubbercurry. In his late 80’s, Paddy Joe was well known, not alone locally, but throughout Ireland.

A native of Chaffpool, Paddy farmed throughout his life both at Chaffpool and near Lough Talt. He also worked for many years as a sales man for Pearson milking machines since the 1950s, when simple bucket plant machines gradually replaced the old style hand milking. Pearson’s equipment was well respected, and Paddy had the gift of talk to close deals with farmers throughout Ireland.

As milking equipment improved, Paddy was able to update and replace for his loyal customers. He was also an able horseman and had a talent for spotting quality horses when doing his rounds on dairy farms. Pearson’s were based in Co. Kildare, the home of horses, so he was ideally located to hear of good hunting horses which he bought, sold and bred. Paddy was active till shortly before his death.

His remains reposed at the Morahan Funeral Home and burial took place in Achonry Cemetery. Paddy is survived by his wife Mary, sons, Paraic, Eugene and Kieran, in-laws, and relatives, all to whom sympathy is extended. May he rest in peace.

JOHN O’CONNOR R.I.P.

The recent death occurred of John O’Connor, late of Masshill, Cloonacool. Age 92, John was an easy going, yet hardworking man who knew how to balance the joy of life with working. It is said he was never brought to hospital as a patient till a few days before his death.

Living in a neat cottage along the side of the road deep in the Ox Mountains near Lough Easkey, John farmed the hills of Masshill all his life. He was a keen sheep farmer and cut turf with the slane till he was nearly 90 years old. The fresh air, mountain walks and a basic water supply from nature could have been his recipe for a long and healthy life.

When he turned 90, his friends and relatives threw a birthday party for him in Cloonacool, an event he enjoyed thoroughly. He was also driving his car till his late 80’s, and after he stopped driving his good neighbours in Masshill ensured he still got out and about.

John’s remains reposed at the Morahan funeral home where his many friends and acquaintances called to pay their last respects to a quiet, humble and unique man. He is survived by many cousins and friends, all to whom sympathy is extended. Burial took place in Cloonacool Cemetery. May he rest in peace.

SEÁN BRETT R.I.P.

The death occurred on January 1 last of Seán Brett, late of Gowlaun, Rooskey at St Attracta’s Nursing Home, Charlestown. Seán was a native of Carnagopple, Tubbercurry, but emigrated like a lot of his generation to England in the early 1950s in search of work. After spending his working life in England, Seán returned to Ireland and purchased a retirement home in Gowlaun, a place he came to love. His family loved to visit as did his grandchildren, and Seán always enjoyed their visits. In recent times, he was cared for in St Attracta’s Nursing Home.

His remains reposed at St Theresa’s funeral home, Curry, and burial took place in Rhue Cemetery, not far from his native home. Seán is survived by sons, Paul, Seán and Michael, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews, nieces and relatives, all to whom sympathy is extended. May he rest in peace.

EVELYN HUNT R.I.P.

The recent death occurred of Evelyn Hunt (née Gilmartin), late of Ballinvalley, Achonry, Lavagh. In her late 80’s, Evelyn was a native of Gleann, Riverstown, but moved to Achonry over 50 years ago when she married her late husband, Frank. Evelyn became part of the wider Achonry community and was always on hand to lend help when needed. She was a keen card player, and always enjoyed her game of 25.

Evelyn’s remains reposed at the Morahan funeral home prior to removal to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Mullinabreena. Burial took place in Court Abbey Cemetery. She is survived by her daughters, Mary Barrett (Lavagh), Margaret (Trim), and Ann (San Francisco), in-laws, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends, al to whom sympathy is extended. May she rest in peace.

OCTOGENARIANS

Local men who recently celebrated their 80th birthday recently include, Charlie Faul, Paraic Kennedy and Luke Kilcoyne. All were school classmates in the old primary school in Tubbercurry in the mid 1940s before making names and careers for themselves.

Charlie is a singer of note and still trains greyhounds. Luke also made a name for himself in the greyhound and GAA world, while Paraic has been a golfer and golf administrator for over 50 years in Tubbercurry and Enniscrone Golf Clubs. All three are still fully active and looking only half their age, so consultations with them on their secrets of life is advisable.
