Bohemian Rhapsody may never have been released as a single if record company executives had their way back in 1975. They believed that, at just under six minutes, the track was too long for radio play, and would never be a hit. DJ Kenny Everett at Capital Radio in London and Paul Drew at RKO in the States disagreed, giving the song heavy rotation on the air. This sparked huge audience demand, forcing Queen’s record company to release the song in late 1975. Reportedly the most expensive single ever made at that time, Bohemian Rhapsody spent nine weeks on top of the UK charts over Christmas and into the early weeks of ‘76. After Freddie Mercury’s death in November, 1992, the epic track returned to the top for another five-week run, this time as a double-A side with ‘These Are The Days Of Our Lives’, becoming in the process the only song by the same artist to be the Christmas number one twice. Frequently ranked high in ‘best songs of all time’ lists, Bohemian Rhapsody has now sold over six million copies worldwide.
