COUNCIL REPORT

-

BALLYMOTE Councillor Keith Henry has called on the Council to recognise the centenary of the election of Countess Markievicz to the House of Commons this year.

He also included a call for the centenary of the extension of the vote to women this year.

“We had a great 1916 Centenary,” he told the meeting. “I would ask that we would mark the Countess’ election with something special and show the contribution Countess Markievicz made to politics here,” he said. Cllr Thomas Healy said the countess “led the way for women here.”

Chief Executive said the decision to mark her centenary was a matter for councillors themselves but the question was “how do we do it and we have to look at the budget.”

It was agreed that the 1916 Committee of Sligo County Council would look at the issue and include Cllr Henry in their discussions.
