Road to Carrowkeel monument must be improved for tourists

-

IT’S easier to get around bails than around the potholes into one of Sligo’s biggest tourist attractions.

That’s according to Councillor Martin Baker who, along with Councillor Paul Taylor, asked for the Council to call on Minister Michael Ring to provide extra funding for Local Improvement Schemes (LIS) this year.

The councillors also wanted the Carrowkeel road included in that funding.

They were told by Director of Services Tom Kilfeather that in relation to the Carrowkeel road, it was up to the owner of the land where the road is located to apply for a Local Improvement Scheme -if they’re allocated this year.

“It’s a huge tourist attraction,” said Cllr Baker. “The road into it is in need of repair,” he added. Cllr Paul Taylor said the road was very important, not only to Keash but to all of South Sligo.

“It would be a great benefit to tourism in the area,” he said, adding that there were many people living on private roads and the Local Improvement Schemes were the only way they had of funding road repairs. It’s up to the Minister to grant funding for LIS this year.
