Concern over damage to North pier at Mullaghmore

-

MULLAGHMORE harbour wall which has withstood heavy seas, pounding waves and ferocious storms for almost 200 years is finally starting to crumble.

The back of the North pier was badly damaged by storm Fionn last week (pictured right).

Councillors Seamus Kilgannon, Declan Bree and Marie Casserly raised the issue at yesterday’s meeting of Sligo Municipal District.

They said locals were very concerned about its condition and anxious to see it repaired as soon as possible.

Cllr Bree urged the Council to urgently look for grant aid to restore the pier to its original condition as soon as weather conditions permit.

Cllr Casserly also has a motion down for next months meeting to look for urgent funding to get this repaired. She said the location of the damage is at the rear of the Old Quay beside Pier Head Hotel.

Mullaghmore Harbour was designed and built by Alexander Nimmo in 1824 on instruction from Lord Palmerston. Councillor Casserly said it was very historic and the workmanship exceptional.

Director of Services Tom Kil- feather said the Department of Agriculture and Marine had not provided funding so far.

“We’re carrying out an assessment of all coastal areas adn will be making an application for funding to the Department,” he told members. Cllr Kilgannon said it was important to repair the wall before any more damage was done: “Funds will have to be found,” he said.
