The Sligo Champion

Big names for Enniscrone Kilglass dinner dance

- BY CATHAL MULLANEY

HURLER of the Year Joe Canning is set to visit Sligo next month. The Galway superstar, who played a key role in their historic All-Ireland success last September, is set to be one of the special guests at the Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA Dinner Dance on February 10th.

Regarded as one of the all-time hurling greats, Canning will be appearing at the event in Enniscrone’s Diamond Coast Hotel having put in a memorable year of individual performances in 2017. These include a remarkable match-winning point against Tipperary in the All-Ireland semi-final and a 0-9 personal haul in the All-Ireland final win against Waterford. The 29-year-old has won four All-Stars during a glittering career, and was also crowned Young Hurler of the Year in 2008.

Canning will be joined on the night by Tyrone football legend Peter Canavan who is also attending the night as a special guest.

Canavan won two All-Ireland’s with Tyrone as a player and also captured six All-Star awards in one of the most decorated careers in the history of the GAA.

Commonly referred to as Peter ‘The Great’, Canavan will no doubt be reminded of the 2002 encounter between his Tyrone side and Sligo in the 2002 All-Ireland qualifiers series, which ended in a memorable Sligo win over their much-vaunted opponents at Croke Park. The win remains one of the best of the modern era for the Yeats County.

Since hanging up his boots in 2005, Canavan has worked extensively in the media and currently can be seen as an analyst on Sky Sports’ GAA coverage.

Tickets for the Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA dinner dance will go on sale shortly from the usual outlets.
