Things hotting up in Sligo Rovers Astro
THE battle for the Premier & Championship crowns in the Sligo Rovers Astro League continues to excite, with no less than 21 goals on show in last week’s fixtures.
Inter Inferno bounced back from a 4-1 defeat to the Sally Gardens by trouncing Calry 5-1 in what proved to be very difficult weather conditions. Brian Connellan, Ray Mulvey, Kevin Lynch and a brace from Gerry Moore topped of a wonderful night for the Carrick on Shannon men, who now sit just three points off top spot in the championship. The Sally Gardens continue to warrant their title favourites tag after making it two wins from two at the expense of the White Gorillas. Many thought going into the game it could potentially be a cricket score. However credit must be afforded to the Gorillas who made life tough for the Ballisodare men. Ultimately, the Ballisodare group did prevail 2-0, with goals coming from Johnny Kenny and the ever improving Niall O’Donnell. Ballymote continue to put the pressure on the Sally Gardens however, after seeing off a strong Strand Celtic side 2-1. The result ensured that the South Sligo side sit top of the Championship on goal difference after taking maximum points from their open- ing two games. Goals on the night were from Alan Farry and Aidan O’Brien while Conor O’ Mahony got on the score sheet for Strand. The Premier division is proving to be just as intriguing as Forrest Celtic made it two wins from two and are the surprise leaders as they site two points clear at the top. They wiped away the Bald Eagles on Friday last 5-1, with goals from Luke Brennan, Kenneth Appleby, Nigel Hargadon, Diarmuid Slevin and Brian Munnelly. It was a real statement to the league of their desire to compete at the very top, with Forrest now registering an impressive nine goals in their opening two games.
Hot on their heels are the title favourites Cornview, who took advantage of some guilt edged missed chances from the Bourbon Bar as they ran out 4-0 winners on the night. Kiki O’ Grady, Barry Leonard and a brace from the league’s joint top goal scorer Gareth Kelly sent them second in the league standings, two points off Forrest Celtic.
Foleys Bar vs. GSS was postponed due to storm Fionn and will be rescheduled at a later date.
