Ballisodare United set to host Rovers in friendly

-

SLIGO Rovers manager Gerard Lyttle has spoken of the importance of the Bit o’ Red playing Ballisodare United in Youngs Quarry on Sunday for the local community.

Rovers have a busy week ahead with a friendly on Friday in Galway before taking on Ballisodare two days later.

While the game is unlikely to give Rovers the sternest of tests in pre-season, and the match is part of the deal which saw John Mahon move to The Showgrounds, Lyttle feels the visit to the junior side is more than worthwhile.

“When you see the likes John developing through the Ballisodare, it shows how important it is to have strong clubs around Sligo giving players opportunities and giving them a chance to progress in the game.

“He spent seven years with them and that’s a huge part of his development. “It takes a lot of hard work to run junior clubs to give players the platform to play and it’s a really important part of the community. We’re grateful to have John in our squad and without the work of his coaches and the volunteers at Ballisodare, he wouldn’t be in the position he is.

“I know the committee are constantly looking to better already strong roots in the community and visits to the local clubs are important. “There seems to be a big following of Rovers fans in the area as well.

“I think it’s great that we can bring a team to their home venue for a game and I hope it’s a great day for the people that put a lot of their time into the club and the game is enjoyable for all that attend.”

The game kicks off at 2pm. Rovers are set to announce three more pre-season fixtures shortly.
