Flooding cuts off walkways in park and estate laneway

- By JENNY MCCUDDEN

THE popular walkway through Doorly Park along the shores of the Garavogue has been completley cut off due to flooding.

The river which runs into Lough Gill has burst its banks in a number of places making the pathway impassable and potentially dangerous.

It follows spells of extremely heavy rainfall last week. By Wednesday lunchtime the route was blocked but there were no signs to warn people at the entrance to Doorly Park.

A spokesman for the council said: “The walkway at Doorly Park is susceptible to flooding after heavy rain.

“It is mainly used by local walkers and runners in daylight hours, they are very familiar with the terrain and water levels, and will invariably know when the path is likely to be impassable.”

Meanwhile the laneway pictured above in Crozon which is used to access the busstop and Circular Road was also cut off due to flooding. Concerned residents say it is an ongoing problem after a shower of heavy rain.

Liam McGettigan who lives in Crozon Downs says his property which backs onto the lane has already been damaged: “The water has risen through the walls and into my shed. I had electrical eqipment on the floor of the shed.”

More worryingly Liam says: “It’s only a matter of time before it comes in the back door. The problem gets worse every winter.”

Liam adds: “The council were up last Wednesday to dredge the drain but the pathway is next to a sloping green and the drain is just a soak pit. It needs to be connected to the water mains.”

A spokesman for the council said: “Sligo County Council Roads staff investigated the recent incidents of flooding in Crozon/Knocknaganny, and the gullies / drainage pipes were jetted.

“All appear to be working presently. These gullies are draining to soak pits within the adjacent green area.

“Soak pits such as these can sometimes be prone to blockage, and we are asking residents in the area to contact us without delay should the problem arise again.”
