Man gets a third chance in relation to drugs offences

-

A student appeared before Sligo District Court for the third time on a drugs charge.

Kevin Coen (23) of Rathedmond and Martin Cuffe (25)of Rathmeel Lawns, Ballina admitted possession of cocaine at Abbey Street on April 5 th last. For Coen it was his third time before the court on drugs offences with two previous possession charges with regard to cannabis.

Inspector Donal Sweeney said the value of the cocaine was €20. Ms Laura Spellman, solicitor (defending) pleaded that Coen was a fourth year student who had intentions of travelling to Canada when he graduated.

Coen accepted he got chances from the court in 2014 and 2016. “Have you not learned your lesson?” - Judge to defendant. “I have slightly. I’m starting to grow up now” - defendant. He was hoping to go to Canada where three of his friends were.

He was asked by the Judge why was he messing about with drugs in light of his previous dealings with the court and Coen replied he had finished college that night for the year and “it was just stupid thing to do to be honest.”

Judge Kilrane adjourned the case against Coen for monitoring to December 13th and for production on that date of €600 for Hope House.

“That’s three chances you are after getting now,” said the Judge. Cuffe, a chef with no previous convictions was ordered to come up with €200 for Hope House in April and if this was done the Probation Act would be applied.
