The Sligo Champion

Shoebox appeal is a huge success

-

THE Team Hope Shoebox appeal brings great joy to children across the world, and this Christmas was no different.

A grand total of 5914 shoe boxes were collected in Sligo, before being shipped to Albania early in December.

Year on year for over 20 years the people of Sligo and the surrounding areas have helped the appeal.

Schools, workplaces and individual families donated shoe boxes full of gifts.

The main Sligo organiser Jennifer Irwin and her team of volunteers (new volunteers always welcome) were busy checking, sealing and packing shoe boxes into large cartons to load on to lorry, before volunteers assisted in loading the truck with the shoeboxes.

A total of 264,579 shoeboxes were sent from Ireland this year. These boxes go to children of families who live on less than €1 a day and in most cases this Team Hope Christmas Shoebox will be the only gift they receive for Christmas.

Jennifer said: “A big thank you to all. Please keep on helping”.

All year round Jennifer collects fillers to top the shoe boxes like playing cards, small soft toys, cars, dolls, stationary and more items.
