Speeding concern at The Oaks

-

COUNCILLOR Tom MacSharry has called on the Council to assess the need for traffic calming measures at The Oaks, Woodtown Lodge estate in the interests of health and safety.

“There’s an unbroken stretch of road where cars can build up speed. There are a lot of young families in the area concerned about speeding,” he said.

Senior Engineer Brian Flynn told members that staff would assess the area early this year but hoped the roll out of the 30kph Slow Zones initiative would negate the need for traffic calming measures there.

Commenting on the issue, Councillor Chris MacManus said the ramps on Cairns Road were “ineffective” at reducing speeding motorists.

Cllr MacManus told the meeting that cars were able to bypass the ramps.

“It means cars coming down the road just accelerate their speed by the time they get to Markievicz Park,” he said.
