Seven-bedroom Georgian home with sea views selling for €250,000

LEITRIM has the shortest coastline of all the coastal counties, with only two-and-a-half kilometres worth of seashore wedged between the neighbouring counties of Sligo and Donegal.

A very pleasant strip of coastline it is though, and right in the middle of it is Tullaghan House, a dignified Georgian country house on two acres with its back turned to the water.

It was reportedly built in the mid-18th century, although the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage is inclined to insist on 1830. The NIAH also comments on Tullaghan’s curious setting, remarking that “unusually it backs directly onto the road to the north”.

To the south Tullaghan House faces the N15, at the end of its avenue, which will have helped provide footfall during its days as a guesthouse. It also has lovely views of the sea and of Ben Bulben and is only three kilometres from the resort town of Bundoran.

It has seven bedrooms on the first floor, six of them en-suite.

Also on this floor is a former priest’s hole, now in more prosaic use as a linen room.

On the ground floor, off the grand entrance hall, are two reception rooms with an archway between, as well as a catering kitchen with ancillary laundry room and pantry.

The house needs restoration and is fairly dilapidated now but it has lovely original features including sash windows, fireplaces and chandeliers.

The two acres of grounds include lawns, box hedging, old roses and mature broadleaf trees along the avenue, as well as some very promising stone outbuildings. It’s near the Drowes River and you can fish there by arrangement.
