He was a regular attendee at shows and fairs, and often came home with donkeys, ponies, dogs, goats, pigs and all sorts of hens and ducks. As well as farming his land at Gortermone, near Banada Abbey, he also worked for many years through the ‘60’s and ‘70’s and into the ‘80’s on the farm attached to Banada Convent, along with men like John James Cosgrove, Michael Kirrane and Tom Meehan. A good man for a one liner, witty comments on the topic of the day, he was a regular in the pub in Tourlestrane where he would digest the news of the day in the company of friends. His old tractor will now be missed on the road between Tourlestrane and Gortermone.

THE ENNISCRONE ROAD

Many residents from Tubbercurry and the general South Sligo area are complaining for years about the state of parts of the road to Enniscrone. The first bad stretch with high trees and hedges is at Drumartin. The next section is leading into Bonniconlon from the Windy Gap, and it is understandable to an extent about this as you are descending down a mountain.

The worst and most dangerous section runs from Bonniconlon to Corballa which is narrow and unimproved for the last 50 years. While part of this road is in Co. Mayo, it should be too difficult for the Councils from both Counties to liaise for the sake of safety. This section is narrow, twisty and always slippy, and no maintenance or improvements have ever been done worth noting. This leads to the seaside village of Enniscrone, and the more publicised Wild Atlantic Way.

How are tourists to be encouraged off the WWW when roads for so called ‘loops’ are death traps. Tubbercurry Chamber of Commerce will be writing shortly to Sligo and Mayo Councils about these stretches, and in the meantime, councillors could be investigating the situation vis a vis money.
