YEATS’ 79TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATION IN DRUMCLIFFE

REMARKABLE insights into Yeats life in his own words were shared at the 79 th Anniversary Commemoration ceremony held in Drumcliffe Church on Sunday evening.

“It was really, really lovely,” said Yeats Society Director Susan O’Keeffe. The ceremony featured readings from letters written by Yeats about his own work.

Irene Fleming read from a letter sent by Yeats to Sean O’Casey about his play The Silver Tassie, famously rejected by Yeats at the Abbey in 1928.

Attendees heard Yeats’ first memory of Maud Gonne and heard about what was going through his mind as he prepared to step into the Nobel Prize Hall to give his speech.

“It gave a great insight into his life, but not the standard one,” said Susan. Maribeth Milne and Drumcliffe Tidy Towns created a special Yeats tree (pictured below), while Mayor of Sligo Cllr Hubert Keaney aptly read ‘Politics’ by Yeats.
