Sligo Volunteer Centre gets funding to maintain services
THE Sligo Volunteer Centre has received it’s annual allocation of funding to operate their services.
They’ve been granted €106,400 for this year’s services from the Minister of State at the Department of Rural and Community Development, Seán Kyne.
It’s part of an allocation of €3.5 million to support volunteering centres across the country.
Manager of the centre Ciara Herity has welcomed the announcement:
“There was an increase last year of ¤10,000 and they’ve maintained that,” she told The Sligo Champion.
“We welcome it but it’s only restoring our funding to where we were at before the recession. They are at least paying heed to our calls for an increase in funding to bring us back up to where we were,” she added.
Sligo/Leitrim Deputy Tony McLoughlin said: “The Sligo Volunteer Centre plays a vital role in enabling volunteering locally, allowing them to give back to the community and I am delighted to see it receive additional funding.”
“The Centre publicises opportunities and facilitates volunteers who want to feel connected to their community in Sligo and it helps foster a sense of involvement and promotes good citizenship through its excellent staff.”
“The Sligo Volunteer Centre provides good practice in volunteering and is a major asset to our county and our community in Sligo,” concluded McLoughlin.
