Vital win for Cornview in Astro League

-

TEN man Cornview registered an invaluable victory in the Sligo Rovers Astro league on Friday last, as they defeated high flying Forrest Celtic 1-0.

Going into the game, Forrest Celtic were unbeaten in the division and sat top of the league standings, to the surprise of most.

They had registered an impressive seven points from their opening three games.

Cornview, on the other hand, went into the game with four points from their opening two games and being title favourites in the eyes of most, were under some considerable pressure to pull off a result.

The opening ten minutes of the encounter provided some tense moments, as both sides were unwilling to commit too many forward so early on.

The game swung in Forrest Celtic’s favour 20 minutes into proceedings, as Cornview’s captain Darren Kearns was sent off for violent conduct.

The game remained scoreless at half time. Perhaps the second half proved why Cornview are such a formidable opponent as they rallied together, stood firm as one and defended for their lives.

Their determination and resilience was rewarded as Keith Carty came up with the only goal of the game shortly after to give his side a 1-0 win and send them top of the Premier Division on goal difference.

The Championship Division is proving just as intriguing as title favourites, Sally Gardens, were held to a scoreless draw by winless Calry.

This result ensures the title race is wide open yet again, with five sides separated by just four points.

The White Gorillas enjoyed their first victory in the Astro League since December 13th as they ran out impressive winners over Ballymote 3-1.

Marcus Hunter, Joey Kennedy and John McClean got the goals for the Gorillas which lifted them from the bottom of the league. Stephen Healy got a consolation goal for Ballymote.
