CLOONCOOL COMEDY

Cloonacool Players drama group will present the hilarious ‘ ’Cupid Wore Skirts’’ a three act comedy by well known playwright Sam Cree, in Cloonacool Community Centre this weekend. It is running on Friday night February 9 th, Saturday night 10 th and Sunday night 11 th at 8pm each evening.

This hilarious three act comedy tells the story of Andrew Coulter (Martin McIntyre) a widower who lives with his elderly father (John McIntyre) and teenage son (Darragh McGarry).

Andrew attempts to find a wife, in order to win a bet with his caustic sisterin-law (Geraldine Lundy) a spinster with whom he has never got on well. When at his married daughter Daphne’s (Regina Henry) instigation, he advertises for a wife in the personal column of the local newspaper, he finds that the respondents are not quite what he had imagined.

As the scenes unfold we meet a young ambitious French girl Monique Le Blanc (Breege Calvey) who replies to Brian’s advert for a singer for his band, only to find herself mistaken for a respondent to Andy’s advert. Glady’s Gilmore (Laura Mullarkey) in search of a fourth husband to be a father to her latest baby, and Isobel Stanfield (Margaret McIntyre) a prim, proper and ‘ ’pure’’ spinster changes completely after drinking too much dandelion wine.

The wit, repartee and comic jibes between all the characters throughout the play is side-splitting funny and is delivered with great comic timing by the whole cast, and is backed up by a dedicated, experienced and wonderful back stage crew.

The play is directed by Tom Towey and produced by stalwart Sean Walsh.

The group are playing in the Hawk’s Well theatre on Tuesday 13th February, in the Ballina Arts Centre on Friday 16 th February, in Ballintogher Community Centre on Friday 23rd February and finishing up in St. Brigid’s Hall theatre Tubbercurry on Sunday February 25 th.

The group will also be supporting three local girls who will be volunteering overseas in the coming months 2017 Sligo Rose of Tralee contestant Lisa Maloney, Mary Marren and Oonagh Conway, and the Cloonacool Players wish them the best of luck on their travels.

THE DRAWER BOY

This production follows the journey of a young actor arriving at a remote Canadian farm to gather material for a play.

The Drawer Boy was first introduced to Irish audiences by Steppenwolf, the famous Chicago theatre company and was recognized as a beautiful, fully and humane story of the spirit of life. In this production, John McDwyer directs Glens Theatre favourites Gerry Farrell, Michael Roper and Wayne O’Connor, in a production which relates the tale of the young actor as he encounters two old farming friends who allow him to stay with them for his research. It soon becomes apparent that all is not what it seems and the young actor uses his curiosity and skill to re-enact an event in the farmers’ lives that exposes a fallacy and changes all three forever. There is much gentle humour in this sad and touching, multi-award winning play and given the usual Beezneez production values, this is not a show to be missed. Thursday, February 15 th in the Glen’s Centre.
