Engineering demystified
THERE’S never been a better time to become an engineer, a profession with “limitless” job prospects.
That’s according to Chairman of Engineers Ireland North West region, Michael O’Halloran, who was speaking in advance of Engineers Week at IT Sligo this months.
“Engineering is a vast discipline with limitless career opportunities and we organise this week of activities each year primarily to try to demystify it somewhat for interested students and their parents,” he said.
“It’s an exciting time to be an engineer at the moment and there are a lot of very promising employment opportunities for engineers in the North West and around the world,” he added.
The Institute plans on bringing engineering to life with a wide range of free activities to mark Engineers Week this month.
Engineers Week is an annual campaign to promote engineering as a career and the importance of the profession to Ireland.
It will take place this year from February 24 th to March 2rd and a wide range of free events are being organised by Engineers Ireland and IT Sligo to bring the subject alive for prospective students, their parents and other members of the public.
IT Sligo lecturer John Casserly from the Department of Civil Engineering and Construction, who will be coordinating the events in the college, said: “We are very excited to be hosting so many events in the Institute of Technology, Sligo as part of Engineers Week 2018. The events are designed to cater for all ages and members of the public from primary school children to professional engineers.”
Events during the week include: •A public lecture titled ‘Electric Vehicle Infrastructure and Technology Developments’ by John Mooney Operations Manager, ESB Electric Cars (IT Sligo, Feb 26 th)
•A Primary School Showcase ‘Ire- land’s Engineering Superheroes’ By Scientific Sue (IT Sligo, Feb 28th)
•A Secondary School Showcase Film Screening ‘Dream Big: Engineering Our World’.
•A Coder Dojo workshop will be held at IT Sligo (Mar 2) .
All events are free and most are open to members of the public to attend.
Engineering is a wide industry that employs thousands of people in the North West region in the areas of civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering, medical devices and environmental protection, to name but a few.
